Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark had an extraordinary night in Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Wings, despite the team’s 101-93 loss.
Clark shattered the WNBA single-game assists record by dishing out 19 assists, surpassing Courtney Vandersloot’s previous record of 18 set in 2020.
However, Clark’s remarkable performance was overshadowed by frustration as she struggled to lead her team to victory against one of the league’s weakest teams.
Late in the game, with the Fever trailing by 8 points and only 17.5 seconds remaining, Indiana called a timeout. Cameras captured a visibly irritated Clark questioning her coaches, saying, “Why are we on timeout? It’s done.”
Clark’s frustration was evident throughout the game.
After a costly turnover late in the match, she grabbed a water bottle from a staffer and slammed it to the ground in anger, causing a towel girl nearby to look visibly startled.
Despite the loss, Clark’s record-breaking night highlighted her incredible potential. Heading into Wednesday’s game, she had already shown signs of a future Hall-of-Fame career, scoring or assisting on 849 of the Fever’s 2,033 points this season. This impressive stat, reported by ESPN’s Rebecca Lobo, means Clark was responsible for 41.8% of her team’s points, the highest percentage of team points by any player this season.
Clark’s passion and intensity were on full display, as was her frustration in a challenging game. Her ability to break records so early in her career underscores her immense talent and the promise she holds for the future of the WNBA.
As the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft, Clark continues to prove why she was selected first overall. Despite the disappointing loss to the Wings, her 19-assist performance not only set a new league record but also cemented her status as one of the most exciting and dynamic players to watch in the league.
