April Fools’ Day pranks can be entertaining, but in today’s era of widespread misinformation on social media, some argue that such jokes cross a line.
Despite this, some continue to embrace the tradition.
On Monday, sports media outlet Overtime stirred controversy by tweeting that Caitlin Clark had been ruled out of the Elite Eight game due to injury. Of course, this was an April Fools’ Day prank.
While intended as a joke, such pranks can mislead and upset fans. Many criticized Overtime for the ill-received attempt at humor.

“I thought the point of April Fools was that the jokes were supposed to be funny… like, what compels one to do this? And it’s NOT a stan account either?!?” one fan expressed.
“Hey, official accounts like you shouldn’t be allowed to participate in this April Fools gimmick lol this is not even funny,” another fan commented.
“Announcing fake injuries on April Fools’ with 1.6 million followers is messy as hell,” added another critic.
Some simply found the prank distasteful, with one fan bluntly stating, “This lame as hell. Not even funny.”
Following the barrage of criticism, overtime deleted their April Fools Caitlin Clark tweet.
Meanwhile, Iowa and LSU are set to face off shortly after 7 p.m. E.T. on Monday night, with the game airing on ESPN.
