Among those offering words of encouragement is North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick, who has a storied history with Moss. Speaking on the latest episode of the COACH podcast alongside Michael Lombardi and Matt Patricia, Belichick shared a touching tribute to his former player.
“Randy Moss is not only one of the greatest players I’ve ever had the privilege of coaching, but he’s also one of the best people I’ve ever met,” Belichick began. “He was a joy to work with—always competitive, always prepared, and always putting the team first. He wasn’t just about being great on the field; he wanted to uplift those around him.”
Belichick, who coached Moss during his time with the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2010, reminisced about the wide receiver’s unselfishness and his lesser-known contributions off the field.
“Randy did so much behind the scenes that people never heard about—because he didn’t want them to,” Belichick continued. “He supported kids, paid for experiences they might never have had, and gave generously to causes he believed in. Moss and Belichick shared an unforgettable chapter in NFL history. After being traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Patriots ahead of the 2007 season, Moss delivered one of the most dominant performances ever seen in the league.
Teaming up with quarterback Tom Brady, Moss set an NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions in a single season and helped New England achieve an undefeated regular season. Over 52 games with the Patriots, Moss tallied 259 catches, 3,904 receiving yards, and an astounding 50 touchdowns.
