Many anticipated a swift appointment for the former New England Patriots head coach following his departure from Foxborough last month. However, Belichick’s sole interview was with the Atlanta Falcons, who ultimately opted for Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as their head coach.
The Athletic’s Jeff Howe delved into the reasons behind this surprising outcome, drawing on information from multiple league sources. Three primary factors were consistently highlighted:
- Mishandling of Quarterback Situation: Critics pointed to Belichick’s management of the Patriots’ quarterback scenario in recent years. The departure of Tom Brady in free agency without a clear succession plan raised eyebrows. While opting for Cam Newton in 2020 and drafting Mac Jones in 2021, the perceived failure to develop Jones became a notable concern.
