Bill Belichick’s remarkable streak of coaching in the NFL for nearly 50 years may be in jeopardy as the coaching vacancies across the league fill up, leaving limited options for the legendary coach in 2024.
The Panthers dealt another blow to Belichick’s potential opportunities by reportedly hiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their new head coach.
Despite previous reports indicating Carolina’s interest in Belichick, they didn’t even interview him before finalizing the deal with Canales.

The current status of NFL head coaching vacancies is as follows:
- Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh hired
- New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo hired
- Las Vegas Raiders: Antonio Pierce hired
- Tennessee Titans: Brian Callahan hired
- Carolina Panthers: Dave Canales hired
- Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris hired
- Washington Commanders: Open
- Seattle Seahawks: Open
Belichick was recently linked to the Falcons’ head coaching position, but that opportunity has closed with Raheem Morris chosen as their next head coach.
The Seahawks appear to be the last potential spot for Belichick, as Ben Johnson is linked to the Commanders’ head coaching job.
However, there are no indications of serious interest from the Seahawks or Commanders in pursuing Belichick. Dan Quinn is reportedly the favorite in Seattle, with Mike Vrabel as a potential contender. The Commanders might be waiting for Ben Johnson’s season to conclude before officially hiring him.
It’s becoming increasingly possible that Belichick may not secure a head coaching position for the upcoming season, a surprising turn of events for one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
