Over the past several days, reports have surfaced linking Bill Belichick to discussions about becoming the next head football coach at the University of North Carolina. While the rumors have sparked widespread speculation, Belichick himself has now addressed the topic—albeit somewhat cryptically.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, the 72-year-old coaching legend was asked about his reported interest in the Tar Heels’ head coaching position. Belichick acknowledged having had conversations with UNC Chancellor Lee H. Roberts but stopped short of providing any concrete details.
“I’ve had an opportunity to talk to Chancellor Roberts, and we’ve had a couple of good conversations,” Belichick said. “So, we’ll see how it goes.”
Belichick used the opportunity to reflect broadly on college football, expressing an appreciation for the sport and sharing that he has gained a deeper understanding of it in recent months. True to form, however, he remained tight-lipped about his specific intentions or the likelihood of him taking the job in Chapel Hill.
The veteran coach even joked with McAfee about needing to “get my press conference aura back,” a lighthearted nod to his famously reserved demeanor during his storied tenure with the New England Patriots.

Whether Belichick is seriously considering a move to the collegiate ranks remains unclear, but his comments suggest that the discussions with UNC are genuine. A shift to college football would mark a significant change in direction for the NFL’s second-winningest coach, but there may be personal motivations at play as well.
Despite the intrigue surrounding the UNC rumors, Belichick’s priority may still lie in the NFL. He is just 15 wins (including postseason) shy of surpassing Don Shula as the league’s all-time winningest coach. However, with his future in New England uncertain and no guarantee of another NFL opportunity, Belichick appears to be exploring all his options—including a potential return to the sidelines at the college level.
For now, the coaching legend is keeping fans and analysts guessing about what could be the next chapter of his iconic career.
