In sports, as in life, perception often becomes reality.
For example, despite the WNBA largely welcoming Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark since her debut on May 14, the notion of widespread jealousy or resentment within the league has sparked discussion.
On Friday afternoon, Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon strongly refuted the idea of any animosity towards the rookie. “We love Caitlin Clark,” Hammon declared to reporters, with center A’ja Wilson chuckling nearby. “I think she’s amazing. We’re just here to do our job. Whoever we’re up against, we play.”
Hammon, who has led the Aces to WNBA championships in her two seasons as coach, was clear in dismissing the divisive narratives. “This idea that everyone’s out to get Caitlin Clark, or bringing race into it—stop. It just isn’t true,” she stated.
She also reminded everyone of Clark’s youth and her status as a newcomer. “She’s a rookie. She’s only 22 and still growing. Give her space. Back off,” Hammon emphasized.
