Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles didn’t take joy in the decision to trade quarterback Justin Fields.
Addressing reporters at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting on Monday morning, Poles recounted the challenging moment when he and head coach Matt Eberflus informed Fields of the trade. Poles admitted that it was one of the most emotionally difficult tasks he’s faced in his tenure as GM.
“Talking to Justin was probably one of the tougher things I’ve had to do,” Poles shared, as reported by Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I always emphasize the empathy aspect; having that conversation felt like talking to my own son. His jersey still hangs in his room. So, it really puts into perspective how tough those decisions are.”

The Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick, a departure from the anticipated return for the former first-round pick. However, faced with limited landing options, the Bears felt compelled to make the move unless they were prepared to retain Fields through the draft and beyond.
Poles acknowledged that there were numerous factors contributing to Fields’ departure from Chicago, including the tumultuous environment he experienced during his three seasons with the team.
“There was a turbulent start in his rookie season,” Poles reflected. “Upon my arrival, we needed to address certain issues, which delayed the process of bolstering the team with talent and support. Regarding his development on the field, I felt he was progressing and improving… It ultimately comes down to the timeline and the resources available. To facilitate a player’s growth, it’s crucial to provide ample support and talent. However, this dynamic changes due to the significant investment required.”
With Fields’ departure paving the way, the Bears now have the opportunity to potentially draft a quarterback with the first overall pick, with USC’s Caleb Williams being a likely candidate. Poles revealed that Williams is scheduled to visit Halas Hall during the first week of April, expressing admiration for the quarterback’s leadership qualities.
“His teammates don’t just like him; they genuinely adore him,” Poles remarked, as relayed by Adam Hoge of CHGO Bears.
