Age is just a number.

At 34 years old, Ayesha discussed her experience during doctor’s appointments, where she encountered paperwork labeling her pregnancy as “geriatric” due to her age.
Expressing her concerns, Ayesha emphasized the need for a more nuanced conversation around women’s age and childbirth. She highlighted the alarm and discomfort that comes with being labeled as “old,” especially for women in their 30s and 40s embarking on motherhood for the first time, calling for a shift in the narrative.

“What’s been interesting has been my doctor’s appointments,” Ayesha said. “I’m in my 30s, and so there’s all this paperwork referring to the experience as a ‘geriatric pregnancy’ and all the concerns that come along with that.”
“I think there’s something that needs to be more nuanced when it comes to women, their age and conversations around having children. Many women in their 30s and 40s are going through this for the first time, and being told you’re ‘old’ feels alarming and wild. I think the narrative needs to be shifted a little bit.”
Acknowledging that this pregnancy will be her last, Ayesha reflected on the fleeting nature of time and the importance of cherishing every moment. She emphasized the significance of slowing down and appreciating the journey, recognizing the fragility of life.
In contrast to her previous pregnancies, Ayesha admitted to leaning on her friends and family more, recognizing the value of accepting help and building a supportive community. She emphasized the evolving nature of her village, embracing the idea of people coming and going while acknowledging the importance of nurturing meaningful connections.
Ayesha also highlighted the importance of having a close group of female friends, noting her growing appreciation for the camaraderie and support they provide. As she navigates motherhood and pregnancy, she is discovering the significance of having a strong network of women to lean on and share experiences with.
