Is Daniel Jones’ tenure as a starting quarterback coming to an end?
Despite the New York Giants securing Jones with a four-year, $160 million extension, his future as a starter is now under scrutiny, according to a new report from FOX Sports cited by NJ.com. An unnamed NFL executive suggested, “He’d basically be done as a starter. The Giants have always liked him better than everyone else.”
According to the executive his days are numbered as the search has already begun to replace him as the starter.
Jones’s health is a pressing concern; he played only six games in the 2023 season before a torn ACL in his right knee sidelined him. Before the injury, his performance was less than stellar, with just 909 passing yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions, contributing to a disappointing 1-5 start for the Giants.
The Giants originally picked Jones sixth overall in the 2019 NFL draft, buoyed by a promising 2022 season. However, consistency has eluded him since.
Coincidentally, the Giants hold the sixth pick again in the 2024 draft, which boasts strong quarterback prospects like USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. This places the Giants at a crossroads, potentially looking to reset at quarterback.
This decision comes in the wake of other significant changes within the team.
Last offseason, while Jones secured his hefty contract, the Giants placed the franchise tag on star running back Saquon Barkley, who has since moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles. The franchise’s future remains uncertain, with only two playoff appearances since 2012 and no serious Super Bowl contention since their 2011 victory. The decisions made this offseason could define the Giants’ trajectory for years to come.
