Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese admitted this week that she was heartbroken over the team’s decision to part ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon, who lasted just one season with the Sky, led the team to a disappointing 13-27 record. The organization’s move to let her go signaled that they believed a culture change was necessary to unlock the team’s full potential.
In the wake of Weatherspoon’s firing, Reese took to social media to express her deep emotions about the decision.
“I’m heartbroken,” Reese wrote. “I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life.”
Despite claiming to be at a loss for words, Reese continued to pour out her thoughts about the impact Weatherspoon had on her career and life. Her statement grew more passionate as she detailed the personal connection she had built with her coach.
“She was the only person that believed in me,” Reese continued. “The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a Black woman in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances we went through this year, and when your back was against the wall, you always believed in me. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in such a short time that will last forever. I’ll never question why God brings people into my life and takes them away in the capacity I need them, but I’ve always believed everyone is in your life for a reason and a season. You were the best reason and season. You didn’t deserve this, but I can’t thank you enough. I love you, Tspoon.”
Reese’s outpouring of emotion was met with some confusion, especially given her statement that she “came to Chicago because of Weatherspoon.” Many pointed out that, as a rookie, Reese didn’t have a choice in the matter—she was drafted by the Sky, not signed as a free agent.
This part of her statement, while reflective of her respect for Weatherspoon, was seen as an emotional exaggeration.
Although Reese’s feelings are understandable, her lengthy tribute has raised eyebrows. Some found her statement over the top, while others appreciated her loyalty to a coach who, in Reese’s eyes, had a profound influence on her.
Reese, already thinking ahead, has started campaigning for Sheryl Swoopes to be considered as the Sky’s next head coach. Whether or not that will happen remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Reese is eager to have a strong mentor in place for her second year in the league.
Despite her rookie season being cut short due to a wrist injury, Reese made a solid impression, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game.
As she continues her journey in the WNBA, Reese will be hoping for a fresh start with a new coach—while still carrying the lessons and support she received from Weatherspoon during their brief but impactful time together.
