The family of Aidan Hutchinson is asking fans to keep the Detroit Lions’ defensive star in their thoughts and prayers after he suffered a devastating leg injury during Sunday’s game. Hutchinson, the NFL’s sack leader at the time, sustained the horrific injury during the third quarter of the Lions’ dominant 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
While attempting to sack Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Hutchinson’s left tibia snapped above the ankle after colliding with the leg of his teammate Alim McNeill. The gruesome injury left him writhing in pain on the field.
Hutchinson was quickly rushed to a local hospital in the Dallas area, where he underwent immediate surgery to repair the damage. The severity of the injury has sidelined the 24-year-old for the rest of the season, casting a shadow over the Lions’ victory.
In the wake of the incident, Hutchinson’s sister, Mia, took to social media to share a heartfelt message. Posting to her Instagram story, Mia wrote, “Please pray for Aidan,” alongside a photo of the defensive end suited up in his Lions uniform. The emotional plea resonated with fans and was also shared on the “House of Hutch” Instagram account—a family-run page that often features updates about Aidan and his family, including his parents Chris and Melissa, and sisters Mia and Aria. Mia, who also serves as Aidan’s social media manager, made it clear the family is leaning on the support of the community during this difficult time.

The incident left Hutchinson visibly in pain, and replays of the injury showed the severity of the break. Medical personnel rushed onto the field, and the game was paused for nearly 10 minutes as players from both teams formed a supportive circle around Hutchinson. As he was carted off with a cast on his leg, teammates and Cowboys players alike patted the star defensive end in a show of solidarity.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed Hutchinson’s injury after the game, sharing the team’s sorrow over the loss of such a key player. “It’s tough, you know,” Campbell said. “He’s in good hands now, he’s being well taken care of, but he’s going to be down for a while. It’s hard when you lose someone like Aidan. He’s one of ours, and it’s tough to see.”
Campbell acknowledged how challenging it was for the team to see one of their leaders go down, but praised his players for their resilience in pushing forward. “If you dwell on that too much and start playing timid, that’s when more injuries happen. Our guys snapped back into the moment, and we stayed focused on what we had to do,” he added.
The severity of Hutchinson’s injury was such that FOX Sports declined to show replays of the incident. NFL great J.J. Watt also expressed his concern on social media, describing the injury as “horrific.”
Before his injury, Hutchinson was having a standout season, leading the NFL with 6.5 sacks through six weeks. His third-quarter sack of Prescott was his third of the game, but unfortunately, it will be his last of the 2024 season. The Lions, already in control of the game at the time of the injury, rallied further to secure a convincing win.
Quarterback Jared Goff threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, while running back David Montgomery added 80 rushing yards and two scores. The Lions’ defense also held strong, with rookie Brian Branch intercepting Prescott twice. The Cowboys, struggling to find consistency this season, fell to 0-3 in home games.
As the Lions celebrate their third consecutive victory and a strong start to the season, the team and its fans are now rallying behind Hutchinson as he begins the long road to recovery. Despite the devastating injury, the Hutchinson family remains hopeful, and their request for prayers is a reminder of the support Aidan has from both his team and the wider NFL community.
The Lions’ season will move forward, but the absence of their defensive leader will undoubtedly be felt on the field.
For now, the focus shifts to Hutchinson’s recovery, and as Mia Hutchinson’s post suggests, all thoughts are with Aidan as he embarks on his healing journey.
