Adam Silver has affirmed that the NBA is following its established precedent in addressing the situation involving Josh Giddey, the Thunder guard currently playing amid an investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship with an underage girl.
The NBA Commissioner emphasized the league’s usual approach, stating that players are not typically suspended based solely on allegations. Silver underscored the importance of allowing both police and league investigations to unfold.

During an appearance on ESPN’s “NBA Today” on Friday, Silver stated, “I can’t think of many circumstances where we’ve suspended a player based on an allegation alone.” He pointed out that in Giddey’s case, there is an ongoing police investigation alongside a parallel league investigation. Silver also noted the league’s tendency to take a back seat in cases involving criminal investigations, recognizing the impact on the players and the players’ association working with the league.
The 21-year-old Giddey faces allegations of spending a night with a girl, then 16, in 2021 after meeting at a club in Oklahoma City. He reportedly ended the relationship upon learning her age. The Australian basketball player is currently under investigation by Newport Beach police and the NBA. The girl and her family, represented by attorney Gloria Allred, have reportedly declined to speak to the police.
As of now, neither Giddey nor the Thunder representative has provided comments on the situation.
