Despite enduring a tumultuous journey home due to Friday’s global tech chaos, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter showed remarkable resilience.
He appeared on Monday’s episode of “The Pat McAfee Show” from a cab he hired to drive his family from Detroit to New York after two flight cancellations.
Usually seen in a suit, Schefter joined McAfee in a casual hoodie, earning the nickname “Casual Schefty” from the host. He provided NFL updates as training camp approached, all while smiling and recounting his family’s travel ordeal.
“Airlines are basically being shut down and I’ve never seen a scene like I saw last night,” Schefter recounted. “We were in line at Detroit Metro for six hours before they canceled our flight at 1 in the morning. It looked like a nightclub, with everyone trying to get an Uber, Lyft, cab, or whatever.”
After the cancellation, Schefter and his family returned to their hotel at 2:30 in the morning, only to have their rebooked flight canceled the next day. Determined to get home, Schefter hired a cab to drive them to New York. “We are right now in Pennsylvania, four hours out,” he reported during the show.
Schefter had been in Michigan for personal reasons, “taking care of business for his young daughter.” He described the widespread flight cancellations as a “complete meltdown,” criticizing the airlines for their lack of honesty and transparency. “What’s going on is a travesty,” he added. “I’ve spoken to other people at other airports, and it’s a disaster right now.”

The urgency of their predicament was heightened by the fact that Schefter’s wife, Sharri, who has Type 1 diabetes, had just enough insulin for one more day. McAfee, while lightheartedly praising his friend for “figuring it out,” also expressed genuine concern.
“We’re sorry that you and your family are going through that,” McAfee said. “It’s crazy to think about the real-life implications with the insulin, the diabetes, and how public transportation, especially what commercial airlines are, is potentially affecting somebody’s life.”
He continued, “So the fact that you, Suit, decided to figure it out — ‘We’ll drive this entire thing’ — I love that out of you, Schefty.”
Schefter’s determination and quick thinking turned a potential disaster into a memorable adventure, showcasing his dedication not only to his family but also to his professional commitments.
His appearance on the show, even amid the chaos, highlighted his resilience and adaptability, making “Casual Schefty” an even more endearing figure to his audience.
