Carl Weathers, the former NFL player-turned-Hollywood action star renowned for his roles in the “Rocky” movie series, “Predator,” and “The Mandalorian,” has passed away at the age of 76.
His family confirmed his peaceful passing in his sleep on Thursday.
Weathers gained fame for portraying boxer Apollo Creed in the original “Rocky” film alongside Sylvester Stallone, a role he reprised in three subsequent sequels. He also played Al Dillon, a CIA officer, in the 1987 film “Predator” with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” he played Greef Karga, earning an Emmy nomination in 2021 for his outstanding guest actor performance.
Beyond his iconic roles, Weathers starred in the 1988 action film “Action Jackson,” played a golf coach in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore,” and voiced Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4.” In addition to his acting career, Weathers had a brief stint in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders in 1970 after playing college football at San Diego State University. He also played in the Canadian Football League.

Weathers’ family described him as an “exceptional human being” who lived an extraordinary life, leaving an indelible mark on film, television, the arts, and sports. Colleagues like Adam Sandler and Jesse Ventura remembered him as a true legend, a great actor, athlete, and a beloved individual.
