Last week, Mia O’Brien, a reporter from Jacksonville’s 1010XL radio station, was the first to speculate about a potential connection between San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the Jacksonville Jaguars. In a recent update, O’Brien has provided insights into the absurd asking price for the standout wide receiver as he approaches his fifth-year option.
O’Brien reveals that the 49ers were seeking the No. 17 overall pick in the draft along with wide receiver Zay Jones in exchange for Aiyuk. However, it appears that the Jaguars considered this price too steep, as it would require parting with these assets and committing substantial funds to Aiyuk through a contract extension.

Jones is currently in the final year of his three-year, $24 million contract inked in 2022. For the 2024 season, his base salary stands at $7 million, less than half of the $14.1 million guaranteed to Aiyuk.
Drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round (No. 37 overall) from East Carolina in the 2017 NFL Draft, Jones, standing at 6-2, 200 pounds, showcased his skills last season with the Jaguars. He tallied 34 receptions for 321 yards and two touchdowns across nine games, starting seven, as documented by Pro Football Reference.
If the reported trade proposition holds true, it suggests that the 49ers are open to entertaining offers from interested parties. However, this doesn’t imply they’re hastily looking to part ways with their top receiver from the 2023 season. Ideally, San Francisco is keen on negotiating a long-term contract extension with Aiyuk, aiming to secure his presence in their red and gold ensemble for the foreseeable future.
The 49ers are diligently exploring all avenues and are prepared to make tough calls if it means aligning their financial and roster-building strategies. This stance was evident in their decision to allow defensive tackle Arik Armstead to join the Jaguars.
