Is Aaron Rodgers still tripping?
A conference in Denver hosted by a psychedelic advocacy group is set to draw thousands of attendees, featuring speakers from diverse backgrounds such as an NFL quarterback, a former Republican governor, and a rapper, among others.
The event highlights the increasing acceptance of psychedelics as potentially beneficial treatments for various conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism.
Nicolas Langlitz, a historian who has studied psychedelic movements spoke to the Associate Press about this particular conference.
Langlitz said, this conference is “purely designed to promote the hype,” which can exaggerate the potential benefits but can also drive further funding. “Any kind of overselling is not good for science because science should be accurate rather than pushing things,” he said. “It’s a tradeoff. (The conference) generates interest, it generates ultimately more research, even though the research might be skewed toward positive results.”
Last summer Aaron Rodgers said the Ayahuasca plant, a psychedelic, helped him perform at an elite level for the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 and 2021 football seasons. Rodgers won the league MVP back to back while experimenting with the hallucinogens’. Rodgers said he has also experimented with psychedelic mushrooms.
However, medical experts caution that more research is needed to fully understand the risks and benefits of these substances.
Despite being illegal at the federal level, interest in studying psychedelics has grown, with Republican strongholds such as Utah and Missouri commissioning studies.
The conference, organized by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, boasts a more prominent and diverse list of attendees and speakers than previous events, signifying this interest.
