For the first time since suffering an Achilles tendon injury, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has provided a somewhat ambiguous timeline for his potential return. On Tuesday, he hinted that he might be back on the field in about six weeks.
During his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers stated, “It’ll be a few fortnights.”
This comment came eight weeks after his surgery and followed an incident on Monday night after the Jets’ 27-6 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. During postgame handshakes, he informed Chargers safety Derwin James that he plans to play in “a few weeks,” a moment that was captured on camera and quickly went viral.
Now, the pressing question is: how many fortnights are we talking about here? Assuming that a “few” means three, this would equate to six weeks, as one fortnight equals two weeks.
Under further inquiry, Rodgers reiterated the “fortnights” reference. For those less familiar with this somewhat old-fashioned English term, a fortnight signifies a span of two weeks. If he indeed returns in six weeks, this would take him to Christmas week, where the Jets are scheduled to host the Washington Commanders on December 24.
An NFL player returning from an Achilles injury in just six weeks would be an extraordinary feat. Rodgers, who is 39 years old, has consistently expressed his goal of playing again this season. Before the game, he impressed onlookers by throwing 55-yard passes to a team staffer, demonstrating his ability to use his legs to power long throws. He also performed crossover steps for the first time.
It seems that Rodgers may be playing a clever word game.
