Is there such a thing as toxic positivity?
In 2023, the Denver Broncos enter their second year with Russell Wilson as their quarterback.
After a disappointing first season, where both Wilson and the team struggled, everyone involved with the Broncos is hoping for a better outcome this time around. One individual who is particularly invested in seeing a turnaround is Broncos legend Mark Schlereth.
As a three-time Super Bowl champion, including two victories with Denver, Schlereth has high expectations for Wilson.
In a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Schlereth emphasized the importance of authenticity in Wilson’s performance.
“I say this a bunch about Russell Wilson,” Schlereth said in an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.
“Be real. The inauthentic nature sometimes, I call it ‘toxic positivity.'”

Schlereth recalled a meeting with Wilson during the previous season, where the quarterback discussed his need to improve his own play.
However, Schlereth was disappointed when Wilson shifted the focus to what the team as a whole needed to do better. Schlereth believes that Wilson must take true accountability for his own performance, regardless of the team’s success or failure.
According to Schlereth, this level of accountability and authenticity from Wilson will not only help him regain the respect of his teammates but also earn the admiration of his peers across the league.
