Malik Nabers might be a rookie, but he certainly hasn’t been playing or acting like one this season. The 21-year-old wide receiver for the New York Giants has shown confidence both on the field and off, and his recent comments have sparked plenty of controversy. Nabers made headlines when he called out his own team, labeling the New York Giants as “soft” following their disappointing 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his pointed critique, Nabers also suggested that the team’s issues run much deeper than just the quarterback position, even in light of Daniel Jones’ release.
These comments quickly stirred debate, with some questioning the audacity of a rookie taking such a strong stance so early in his career.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Nabers addressed the backlash he’s received for being so outspoken. Despite his young age, he made it clear that he isn’t about to back down or shy away from being vocal. “Why not? Just because I’m a rookie?” Nabers said. “I’m a part of the team. I got added to this team to be a resource, to be somebody that can change the game. I’m not going to just sit back just because I’m a younger guy and not speak on how I feel.”
Nabers emphasized that his role in the team isn’t just about catching passes; it’s about contributing to the team’s energy and dynamic. “They want me to speak up. They feel like my energy helps the offense, in a way, to be explosive. So, of course, I’m going to speak up if something doesn’t go my way. That’s just how I am. I’m not going to just sit back and just let it go down just because I’m a young player.”
The young receiver also dismissed critics who believe he should keep quiet due to his rookie status. “Clout don’t mean nothing. I still play football. I play it at a high level. So, whoever is saying I don’t have the authority to be speaking up, that’s on them. I don’t care,” he said, unapologetically.

While Nabers defended his right to voice his opinions, he did offer some reflection on how he delivered his message. He acknowledged that if given another opportunity, he might have chosen his words more carefully. However, he remains unapologetic about standing up for what he believes is best for the team. “I don’t regret speaking out at all,” Nabers said. “I’m here to win. If I see something wrong, I’m going to say it.”
Despite the turmoil surrounding the Giants this season, Nabers has been one of the few bright spots for the struggling franchise.
The rookie out of LSU has made an immediate impact, hauling in 67 receptions for 671 yards and 3 touchdowns through his first nine games.
His combination of talent, fearlessness, and leadership has been a welcome addition to an otherwise challenging season for the Giants.
Nabers’s comments may have ruffled some feathers, but his performance on the field has spoken just as loudly. For a Giants team in desperate need of a spark, Nabers’s confidence and ability to back up his words could be exactly what’s needed to help turn things around.
As he continues to grow into his role, it’s clear that Malik Nabers isn’t afraid to be heard—and he’s more than capable of backing it up with his play.
