Matt Eberflus did himself no favors with the explanation he gave for a controversial challenge flag he threw during the Chicago Bears’ game on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Bears entered the second half of their matchup against the Vikings trailing 14-10 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
On the first play of the half, Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold connected with wide receiver Jordan Addison for a massive 69-yard gain, taking the Vikings deep into Bears’ territory.
Eberflus decided to challenge the play, contending that Addison may have stepped out of bounds before eventually being tackled at the Bears’ 23-yard line. After review, officials determined that Addison had remained inbounds, and the challenge was ruled unsuccessful.
Following the game, Eberflus was asked about his decision during a Monday press conference. He explained that the reason for throwing the challenge flag was because the play was an “explosive” one.
“When it’s an explosive there, we want to make sure that we throw that flag,” Eberflus stated. “I think it always warrants a challenge when you have that big of a gain—even if we don’t have the best look that we want to have.”
In fairness to Eberflus, there was at least one camera angle that seemed to show Addison stepping out of bounds during the play. However, the angle itself was not definitive and became the subject of its own controversy. Despite that, Eberflus’ overall rationale for challenging the play was questionable at best. He essentially admitted to challenging based on the magnitude of the yardage gained rather than the likelihood of a successful outcome.

The failed challenge proved costly, resulting in the Bears losing a timeout—a timeout that could have been crucial in a game that came down to the wire. Ultimately, the Bears lost 30-27 in overtime, and the timeout lost to the unsuccessful challenge only added to the frustration for Chicago fans.
Adding to the scrutiny is the fact that Eberflus has struggled with challenges throughout the season. With this latest miss, he is now 0-for-4 on challenges through 11 games, raising further questions about his decision-making in critical moments.
