Fans of NBA legend Tim Duncan might remember his daughter Sidney from her memorable appearance alongside him during a press conference after the San Antonio Spurs clinched the NBA championship in 2014. At the time, Sidney was just a young child, sharing the spotlight with her famous father. Now, she has grown up and is making her own mark in the world of sports.
Sidney Duncan, now a 6-foot-4 college freshman, has become an impressive middle blocker for Stanford University’s volleyball team.
Following in her father’s footsteps when it comes to excelling at a net-based sport, Sidney’s talent and dedication during her high school career in San Antonio earned her a spot on one of the top Division-I volleyball teams in the country. Her towering presence on the court has made her a standout player, much like her father was during his basketball career.
Interestingly, Sidney now competes in the same athletic conference her father did, though in a different sport. After Stanford’s recent move to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Sidney now plays against some of the same schools that Tim Duncan faced over 25 years ago when he was at Wake Forest University.
Wake Forest was a founding member of the ACC back in 1953, and the conference has long been known for its competitive spirit across multiple sports.
Stanford’s volleyball team has been nothing short of dominant in their first season as members of the ACC, boasting an impressive 23-4 overall record and a 15-3 mark in conference play. That includes a straight-set victory over Tim Duncan’s alma mater, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, on October 6.
It must have been a surreal moment for Tim, watching his daughter help Stanford defeat the team that helped launch his own storied career.

Tim Duncan, known as “The Big Fundamental,” is widely considered one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history. Over his 20-year career with the San Antonio Spurs, Duncan won five NBA championships, earned two league MVP awards, and established himself as one of the most respected players in the game. His humility and focus on fundamentals were trademarks of his play, and it’s clear that some of that discipline has been passed down to Sidney as she makes her own path in college athletics.
Sidney’s mother, Amy Sherrill, also has ties to Wake Forest, where she was a cheerleader. The couple’s children, including Sidney, have inherited their parents’ passion for sports. Sidney is the eldest of three siblings, with two younger brothers, Draven and Quill, who may also follow in the family’s athletic footsteps.
Sidney Duncan’s emergence as a top-tier college volleyball player is part of a growing trend of daughters of NBA legends making their presence known on the volleyball court.
Another notable example is Asjia O’Neal, who starred for the University of Texas on their back-to-back national championship teams. Asjia is the daughter of Jermaine O’Neal, a longtime NBA player known for his successful tenure with the Indiana Pacers.
Both Sidney and Asjia represent the next generation of athletic excellence, carrying on the legacy of their fathers while carving out their own unique accomplishments.
For fans of Tim Duncan, it is thrilling to see Sidney’s growth and success as she dominates in her own sport.
She may be following in her father’s footsteps in terms of athletic prowess, but Sidney is undoubtedly making her own name as a rising star in college volleyball.
With her dedication and skill, there’s no telling how far she’ll go—but it’s safe to say that the Duncan name will continue to be associated with excellence in sports for years to come.
