There are plenty of questionable rules in the NFL that leave fans scratching their heads, but after Sunday’s Vikings vs. Bears game, one rule in particular has sparked widespread outrage. The Minnesota Vikings edged out the Chicago Bears in a thrilling 30-27 overtime victory on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings improved to 9-2 on the season, while the Bears fell to 4-7.
Despite the excitement of the close game and another impressive win for Kevin O’Connell’s squad, NFL fans were left fuming over what has now been dubbed the “stupidest rule” in league history.
The controversial rule involves the use of boundary cameras during coach challenges. As explained by FOX NFL officiating expert Mike Pereira, while many NFL stadiums are equipped with boundary cameras, these cameras cannot be used during coach challenges. The reason? Not every stadium has these cameras, which creates a question of fairness.
“If a coach is challenged, you cannot use the boundary cam,” Pereira explained. “There aren’t boundary cams in every stadium, so there’s a question of equity.”
This explanation did not sit well with fans, who quickly took to social media to express their frustration with the league’s inconsistency.
“Here’s a suggestion, NFL: maybe get boundary cameras for every stadium in the league? Or at least allow the ones that have them to use them in coach challenges?” one fan suggested.
The reactions were swift and pointed, with many questioning why the league, which generates billions of dollars in revenue annually, hasn’t yet addressed this glaring issue.
“Right but like… WHY aren’t they in every stadium?” one fan wrote, echoing the disbelief of many others.
“Multi-billion dollar revenue-generating league can’t afford a few more cameras,” another fan added sarcastically.
The frustration was palpable, with some fans questioning why the NFL wouldn’t take every possible measure to ensure the accuracy of its calls. “Why try to get a call right when you have the means to do so…?” one fan quipped.
“Life isn’t fair. Use the cameras,” another fan simply stated, expressing the general sentiment that fairness should be a priority, especially when the technology to improve officiating is available.

The solution to this issue seems straightforward enough: install boundary cameras in every stadium. It might be a bit more challenging to implement in some of the older stadiums, but considering the league’s vast financial resources, it seems entirely feasible.
After all, this is a multi-billion dollar enterprise, and ensuring fairness and accuracy should be well within the league’s capabilities, regardless of cost.
If the NFL has the technology to improve its officiating and challenge system, why wouldn’t it choose to use it? The current rule simply doesn’t make sense to fans, players, or analysts. As it stands, the inconsistency only adds frustration for teams and fans alike who want to see the game called as accurately as possible.
Hopefully, the NFL will take note of the overwhelming fan reaction and make changes in the near future.
Perhaps by the start of the 2025 season, the league will figure out a way to equip every stadium with boundary cameras, ensuring that coach challenges can be assessed as fairly as possible. Until then, this “stupidest rule” will likely continue to be a source of frustration for fans across the league.
