The NFL has reportedly decided on the type of punishment San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa will face following his recent political stunt, which has sparked debate across the sports world. Bosa, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, found himself in hot water after he crashed NBC’s postgame interview wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat.
The incident occurred after the 49ers’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys, and it immediately drew attention for the political message it conveyed. When reporters tried to ask Bosa about the motivation behind the stunt, he declined to elaborate.
“I’m not gonna talk too much about it, but I think it’s an important time,” Bosa said, offering only a vague comment on his decision to wear the hat.
Fast forward a few days, and it appears that there is indeed a punishment looming for the 49ers defensive end. According to a report from NFL insider Jonathan Jones, Bosa will not face a suspension for his actions but could be subject to a fine. The report indicates that the league is considering disciplinary action under its policy on political displays.
“The NFL is looking into Nick Bosa wearing a MAGA hat Sunday postgame. There will not be a determination on any potential fine until later next week. I’m told there is no consideration for any potential suspension,” Jones reported.

Jones added that any potential punishment for Bosa would not be announced until after Election Day, suggesting that the league wants to avoid adding more fuel to an already tense political environment.
“The NFL does have a rule on the books prohibiting players from, among other things, wearing or displaying messages ‘which relate to political activities or causes.’ Based on the timeline from a source, it appears that if any punishment for Bosa comes, it will be after Election Day,” Jones added.
The league’s rules clearly prohibit players from using their platform during games to promote political causes, but this particular incident has triggered a larger discussion about how such policies are applied. The NFL has faced criticism in the past for what some see as inconsistent enforcement of its political rules, and Bosa’s actions have reignited those debates.
Earlier this week, former Pittsburgh Steelers safety and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark spoke out on the issue, delivering a blunt message to both Bosa and those who have remained silent on the matter. Clark drew parallels between Bosa’s actions and the treatment received by athletes of color who have spoken out against social injustice.
“The MAGA movement has been very clear that all lives don’t matter the same, that all people aren’t sort of deserving of the same treatment, of the same compassion, of the same level of life and liberty; and so I do think that the ‘shut up and dribble’ thing that always is told to the LeBron Jameses is when he speaks up against police brutality, to the Colin Kaepernicks when he speaks up against police brutality, to all these athletes who were involved in movements in 2020—it only seems to go to the athletes that look like us, to the people that are speaking for the marginalized and the minorities as opposed to the majorities,” Clark said.
Clark went on to point out the disparity in how political messages are treated in the NFL. “When [Donald Trump] called Colin Kaepernick and other people who kneeled, ‘Sons of [expletives],’ nobody told him to keep politics out of sports. So it seems very clear to me Nick Bosa understands that when you wear that hat, you take a side. You take a side of division in a sport that’s supposed to bring us together.”
Bosa’s actions have clearly indicated his political leanings in the upcoming election, and it seems likely that he will face financial repercussions for making that stance known in such a public and controversial way.
Whether or not the fine will be enough to deter similar actions in the future remains to be seen, but the incident has once again highlighted the ongoing tensions between sports, politics, and the role athletes play in shaping public discourse.
For now, Bosa’s fate lies in the hands of the NFL, and fans will be watching closely to see how the league handles this situation and whether it sets any precedents for how political statements are treated going forward.
