San Francisco 49ers fans are alleging discrimination after they were briefly barred from entering Levi’s Stadium with Donald Trump merchandise during Sunday night’s game. The incident took place on a night that ultimately saw 49ers star Nick Bosa sporting a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hat to celebrate the team’s victory on the field.
However, fan Ailynn Espino shared a different experience on social media, claiming her husband was initially stopped by stadium security due to wearing similar political attire.
“What was supposed to be a fun first-time experience for our kids ended up being an eye-opener for us,” Espino wrote on TikTok and Instagram. She described how her family, excited to attend their first game together, was stopped by a security guard who told her husband he needed to either discard his MAGA hat or leave the stadium.
Espino said the confrontation led to a lengthy 45-minute argument that caused the family to miss the start of the game. “I wasn’t going to share this, but after seeing the field message ‘vote, it takes all of us’ and seeing Bosa flashing his hat to the cameras, I felt we were being discriminated against,” she wrote, referring to the various political statements present at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.
Ultimately, a supervisor stepped in and allowed the family to enter the stadium, which Espino acknowledged gratefully. “Thank you to all the people who stopped and spoke up as this happened,” she added, expressing appreciation for the bystanders who offered support during the incident.
Videos posted by Espino show her and her husband in discussion with Levi’s Stadium security, with several bystanders reacting to the unfolding situation. In the footage, a voice can be heard shouting, “Let’s go Trump,” as other fans passed by, entering the stadium without issue. Espino’s husband could also be seen wearing a Nick Bosa replica jersey during the encounter.
It has since come to light that there is no official ban on MAGA apparel at 49ers games, though it remains unclear why the family was initially prevented from entering.
The incident raised questions about inconsistencies in enforcing stadium policies, especially since Bosa himself later wore a MAGA hat on national television.

Later in the evening, Nick Bosa made headlines of his own by showing off a MAGA hat on NBC’s post-game broadcast. Bosa joined teammates Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and Isaac Guerendo during their interview to flash the controversial hat in support of former President Donald Trump as the next election cycle looms.
However, Bosa remained reserved when asked about his political statement during the post-game press conference.
The 49ers star, who had swapped out the MAGA hat for a different cap, avoided delving deeply into his beliefs. “I’m not gonna talk too much about it, but I think it’s an important time,” Bosa said, hinting at the upcoming election while choosing not to elaborate.
When asked whether he had felt compelled to speak out more openly about his political beliefs in the past, Bosa added, “It’s definitely a little easier nowadays, but no, I don’t feel too inclined to do that. It’s just a different climate.”
The mixed messaging from Bosa didn’t go unnoticed. Many online commentators were quick to criticize his reluctance to discuss the hat, especially given his choice to make such a visible statement.
One prominent voice among the critics was former US men’s national soccer team striker and current MLS Apple TV analyst Taylor Twellman, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts.
“I will be waiting for the ‘shut up and dribble’ crowd to chime in… I have no issue with standing up for what you believe in, no matter what it is, but why wear the hat and then back down from talking about it if it’s so important to you?!” Twellman wrote, expressing confusion over Bosa’s decision to avoid further discussion.
This isn’t the first time Nick Bosa has expressed his support for Donald Trump. Before being drafted by the 49ers as the second overall pick in 2019, Bosa had openly tweeted pro-Trump content, cementing his position as a vocal supporter of the former president.
As for Espino and her family, the incident has left them questioning the apparent inconsistencies between what they witnessed on the field and their own treatment at the stadium gates. discrimination.
For the 49ers organization and its fans, the incident highlights the ongoing tension that can arise when politics and sports intersect, especially during a time when political beliefs are deeply personal and often divisive.
The debate over whether players and fans should bring political messages into the sports arena is far from over, and events like Sunday night’s game show just how tricky the balance between personal freedom and stadium policies can be.
