Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had the perfect response to head coach Sean Payton’s playful comparison of him to an iconic movie character. During the Broncos’ 34-18 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Nix and Payton had a heated moment on the sidelines. After a stalled offensive drive, cameras captured Payton saying something to Nix as the rookie came off the field, visibly frustrated.
While the details of their exchange weren’t made clear, it quickly became a topic of conversation.
In his postgame press conference, Payton was asked about the animated interaction. Though he didn’t reveal what was said, he lightened the mood by comparing Nix to Ferris Bueller, the mischievous high schooler from the classic film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Payton hinted that Nix has a bit of a freewheeling nature on the field, occasionally deviating from the game plan.
“There’s still a little bit of Ferris Bueller in this player that we’ve gotta get rid of. Ferris was quirky, doing his own thing now and then,” Payton joked, suggesting Nix has a tendency to call audibles or make spontaneous decisions when the coach would prefer he stick to the script.

Nix, however, didn’t seem the least bit bothered by the lighthearted critique. In fact, he embraced it. The former Oregon standout responded on social media by posting a Ferris Bueller-themed highlight reel of the Broncos’ win, complete with playful nods to the movie character Payton likened him to.
Nix’s reaction was fitting, especially considering his strong performance against the Raiders. He finished the game with an impressive stat line: 19 completions on 27 attempts for 206 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions.
He also added a rushing touchdown, showcasing his ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground. If his performance was an example of him channeling his inner Ferris Bueller, Nix might want to keep doing it.
The exchange is reminiscent of Payton’s emotional style, something fans witnessed last year when the coach had a similar sideline spat with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.
While Payton’s fiery personality can lead to intense moments, his ability to keep things light—like with the Ferris Bueller comment—shows his rapport with players like Nix.
With a win and a standout performance, Nix’s response shows that he’s taking everything in stride—and that maybe a little Ferris Bueller-style improvisation isn’t such a bad thing after all.
