Deion Sanders has never been one to keep his ambitions for his son, Shedeur Sanders, under wraps, and it seems like he already has a specific NFL team in mind for his son’s future. Deion has been vocal about Shedeur’s potential at the next level, and now he’s dropping hints about where he would like to see his son play professionally.
During a recent appearance on the “Nightcap” show with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, Deion shared some thoughts about the Miami Dolphins and their quarterback situation. Specifically, he raised concerns about Tua Tagovailoa’s health and future, suggesting that the Dolphins may want to consider drafting a new quarterback—and of course, he was hinting at none other than Shedeur.
“What do you do business-wise if you’re the Dolphins?” Deion posed the question to Sharpe and Johnson. “Do you go into the draft and take a quarterback, which is what I’m suggesting, or do you say, ‘Tua, let’s check this out. Let’s see what we’re going to do.’ Is his health more important than that?”
At first, Johnson didn’t quite catch Deion’s drift, but once the realization hit, both hosts understood the direction Deion was heading. Deion even humorously asked Johnson, “So you just got the revelation?” confirming his intention for Shedeur to potentially join the Dolphins.

The comments come at a time when Tua Tagovailoa’s health remains a topic of concern, as the Dolphins quarterback has been placed on injured reserve due to his ongoing recovery from concussions.
Several voices around the league have suggested that Tua should consider retiring for his long-term health, and Deion’s remarks certainly leaned into that narrative. He seemed to imply that if Tua’s health continues to be an issue, it could open the door for the Dolphins to consider a future with Shedeur at the helm.
Deion’s involvement in his son’s future NFL career isn’t new. Earlier this year, in March, Deion hinted that Shedeur might take a page from Eli Manning’s playbook. Manning famously refused to play for the San Diego Chargers when they drafted him first overall in 2004, forcing a trade to the New York Giants.
Deion suggested that Shedeur could take a similar approach if a team he’s not keen on drafts him, positioning himself to land on a team of their choosing.
As for Shedeur, the young quarterback is having an impressive season at Colorado under his father’s leadership. Deion, now in his second year as head coach, has the Buffaloes off to a strong 4-1 start. Shedeur has been lighting it up, throwing for 1,630 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions. His stellar performance has him projected as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft, and some analysts even have him pegged as a potential No. 1 overall pick.
Deion’s desire to have some say in where his son lands in the NFL is just another chapter in the Sanders family’s highly publicized football journey.
Whether or not Shedeur ends up with the Miami Dolphins remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Deion is determined to steer his son’s future in the direction he believes is best.
