University of South Carolina women’s basketball star Ashlyn Watkins was arrested on Saturday, August 31, facing serious charges of assault and kidnapping. The arrest took place in Columbia, South Carolina, following a warrant issued by the University of South Carolina Police Department.
According to the warrant, Watkins is accused of assaulting the victim by “forcefully grabbing her face, pulling her arms, and pushing.” The warrant further alleges that Watkins escalated the situation by picking up the victim against her will, grabbing the victim’s head, and forcing her to walk down a hallway, effectively controlling her movement and preventing her from leaving the area.
The situation took a dramatic turn when the victim managed to escape and pull a fire alarm, which prompted a swift response from local police and fire officials. The victim was treated on the scene for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the warrant.
Following her arrest, Watkins was released on a $30,000 personal recognizance bond. As part of her release conditions, she has been ordered to have no direct or indirect contact with the victim. Watkins’ next court appearance is scheduled for October 25. Despite the severity of the charges, Watkins will be allowed to continue traveling with her team for out-of-state games and practices in the meantime.
The University of South Carolina has acknowledged Watkins’ arrest but has yet to issue a formal statement regarding her status on the team. A representative for the school told local news station WLTX19 that they are aware of the situation and are currently gathering more information. However, it remains unclear whether Watkins will continue to be part of the Gamecocks’ roster as the legal process unfolds.

Ashlyn Watkins has been a key player for the South Carolina Gamecocks, helping the team secure the NCAA National Championship in March with a victory over Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes, winning 87-75 to complete an undefeated season. Watkins contributed to that championship game by playing 14 minutes, scoring 3 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and recording 1 assist.
Now entering her junior year, Watkins was expected to be an integral part of the Gamecocks’ upcoming season, having averaged 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game last year. The team is set to kick off their season on November 10 against North Carolina State. The outcome of Watkins’ legal situation could have significant implications for her future with the team and her basketball career.
