Debates surrounding Caitlin Clark’s rookie season have escalated to the point of ending long-standing friendships within the WNBA community. The drama, fueled by differing opinions on Clark’s performance, has led to a notable rift between two legendary figures in women’s basketball.
Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, has been nothing short of sensational in her debut season with the Indiana Fever. The former Iowa Hawkeyes star has dazzled fans and critics alike, but her meteoric rise hasn’t been without controversy. WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes has been one of Clark’s most vocal critics, expressing strong reservations about the young star’s game.
On the other side of the debate is another WNBA great, Nancy Lieberman, who has stepped up to defend Clark. The disagreement between Swoopes and Lieberman over Clark’s impact on the league has grown so intense that it has fractured their long-time friendship. Lieberman recently opened up about the fallout during an appearance on The Stephen A. Smith Show, revealing that her efforts to discuss the issue with Swoopes have only deepened the divide.
“I called her as a friend and said, ‘You can say whatever you want, but you do have to get the statistics right. Facts matter. It’s okay to have a difference of opinions,’” Lieberman explained. “But she got upset with me on the phone, and I was like, ‘Sheryl, I’m not doing anything to hurt you.’ Now, our relationship is pretty much over. I tried to talk to her at the Final Four, but she didn’t want to engage. My life is going to be good or great with or without Sheryl Swoopes in it, but I’d rather have her as a friend.”
Swoopes, however, wasn’t willing to let the matter rest and took to social media to express her frustration. In a pointed post, she wrote, “Now here you go! I get what you’re trying to do with your boy @stephenasmith, but it ain’t working. You know good and well what happened. And ditto…my life is good without you too (and him). You wanna go there?”

Despite the tension surrounding her, Caitlin Clark has remained focused on the court, steering clear of the controversy. Her performance with the Indiana Fever has been outstanding, as she continues to lead her team to a strong finish in the 2024 season. With the Fever now above .500 and making a push for the playoffs, Clark has solidified her status as the frontrunner for WNBA Rookie of the Year.
As the season progresses, it’s clear that Clark’s presence in the league is shaking up not just the standings but also relationships among WNBA veterans.
While the debates rage on, Clark’s ability to stay above the drama and continue excelling on the court speaks volumes about her potential to be one of the league’s next great stars.
