Travis Kelce is on the brink of landing his first major film role. The Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end is in discussions to headline the action-comedy “Loose Cannons,” a project from Lionsgate. The film has some heavy hitters behind it, with “John Wick” series director Chad Stahelski set to produce through his 87Eleven Entertainment company, alongside Jason Spitz and Alex Young. Tim Dowling, known for his work in the comedy genre, has been tapped to pen the script.
While the project is generating buzz, it appears that production won’t start for some time. Kelce’s focus will remain on the upcoming NFL season, which kicks off in just two weeks, so the timeline for “Loose Cannons” is likely still a ways off.
Kelce, who has 12 active seasons in the NFL under his belt, has been gradually making his way into Hollywood. He’s already a familiar face off the field, thanks to his popular podcast “New Heights,” which he co-hosts with his brother, recently retired Philadelphia Eagles player Jason Kelce. However, Travis Kelce’s rising fame has reached new heights, partly due to his high-profile relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. This increased visibility has opened more doors for him in the entertainment industry. In addition to his potential role in “Loose Cannons,” Kelce is set to host the upcoming game show “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” this fall and will appear in a mysterious supporting role in Ryan Murphy’s FX series “Grotesquerie,” premiering on September 25.
“Loose Cannons” shares its title with a 1990 crime caper starring Gene Hackman and Dan Aykroyd, directed by Bob Clark. That film, which centered on a cop teaming up with a detective suffering from multiple personality disorder to recover a lost Nazi sex tape, was a box office flop. However, Kelce’s new project is not a remake of that film, despite the shared title. Instead, this “Loose Cannons” will focus on two unhinged cops who are paired together in a bid to get them both in line, promising a fresh take on the buddy cop genre.
Screenwriter Tim Dowling is no stranger to comedy, with credits including hits like “Role Models,” “Office Christmas Party,” and Adam Sandler vehicles such as “Just Go With It” and “Pixels.” Meanwhile, Chad Stahelski’s collaboration with Lionsgate on all four “John Wick” films speaks to the high-octane action fans can likely expect from “Loose Cannons.”
Stahelski is also currently attached to direct a remake of “Highlander” for Lionsgate, adding another layer of excitement to his involvement in Kelce’s potential big-screen debut.
As Kelce continues to juggle his burgeoning Hollywood career with his NFL commitments, fans of both sports and cinema will be watching closely to see how this new chapter unfolds.
