Mark Zuckerberg appears to be losing interest in Elon Musk’s revived enthusiasm for a cage match. On Wednesday, July 24, the Meta founder and CEO responded to Musk’s ongoing calls for a fight with a post on Threads.
“Are we really doing this again?” Zuckerberg, 40, wrote, signaling his frustration with the repeated challenge.
This post was in direct response to Musk, 53, who told a reporter, “I’ll fight Zuckerberg any place, any time, any rules.” Despite their public exchanges about a potential match in the octagon, the tech titans have yet to finalize any plans. In June 2023, they seemed to agree to a “cage match” in Las Vegas, but nothing concrete emerged from their discussions.
The idea of the match resurfaced when a user mentioned the competition between Zuckerberg’s Threads and X (formerly Twitter), prompting another user to remind Musk of Zuckerberg’s jiu-jitsu skills. Musk responded, “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.” Zuckerberg then shared Musk’s comment on his Instagram Stories with the caption “Send me location,” to which Musk proposed the Vegas Octagon.
A Meta spokesperson told PEOPLE at the time, “the story speaks for itself,” implying skepticism about the likelihood of the match. The anticipated showdown has faced multiple delays, and it seems it might not happen after all.
In August 2023, Zuckerberg took to Threads again, expressing his frustration over Musk’s lack of commitment to a specific date for the fight. “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on. I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legit competition for charity,” Zuckerberg wrote.

“Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead,” he added, highlighting the Tesla CEO’s inconsistent responses.
Zuckerberg concluded by stating that Musk knows how to reach him if he ever gets serious about scheduling a real, official event. “Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously,” he asserted.
UFC President Dana White had previously stated that the tech moguls were “dead serious” about the match and intended to raise money for charity, with proceeds going to veterans and pediatric hospitals in Italy.
Musk even claimed to have spoken with the Prime Minister of Italy about livestreaming the battle on X and Meta, with an ancient Rome theme and “nothing modern at all.”
Despite the initial excitement and high-profile endorsements, it appears that the proposed cage match between Zuckerberg and Musk may remain a topic of speculation rather than becoming a reality.
