Simone Biles has delivered her most direct response yet to critics who claimed she “choked” during her struggle with the “twisties” at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
In the newly released Netflix docuseries, “Simone Biles Rising,” the four-time Olympic gold medalist addresses those who labeled her a quitter, specifically reading aloud one post that accused her of choking.
Biles mockingly noted that the critic was “sitting on your couch watching me from home. OK.” She continued, as reported by the Laredo Morning Times, “I really don’t need your two cents. And not your two cents because you guys can’t even do a cartwheel.”
During the Tokyo Olympics, Biles withdrew from several events after experiencing the “twisties,” a mental block that causes gymnasts to lose control of their bodies mid-air. This condition led her to stumble in the vault competition and to miss participating in the team final.
Despite these challenges, Biles returned for the balance beam final and earned a bronze medal. Team USA secured silver in the team competition, highlighting the resilience and skill of the squad even in Biles’ partial absence.
In another segment of the docuseries, which will release further installments this fall, Biles revealed the extent of her distress during the “twisties.” She confessed that she wanted to flee the arena after struggling with a vault maneuver. “If I could have run out of that stadium, I would have,” Biles admitted. “But I was like, ‘keep it cool, calm, collected. Don’t freak anybody out.’”
The docuseries also showcases Biles’ return to top form during recent practices, alleviating concerns about her readiness for upcoming competitions. “We’re all breathing a little bit better right now. I’m not gonna lie,” said Cecile Landi, Biles’ coach, expressing relief at her performance in practice sessions.
As the most decorated female gymnast in history, with seven Olympic medals to her name, Biles is preparing for her first competition in Paris on Sunday in the team qualifiers. The final is scheduled for July 30.
Biles’ journey, as depicted in “Simone Biles Rising,” underscores her perseverance and determination, offering a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity.
Her response to critics serves as a powerful reminder of her resilience and the extraordinary pressures faced by elite athletes.
The series provides a behind-the-scenes look at her struggles and triumphs, inviting viewers to witness the dedication and strength that define her career.
