Death, taxes, and Dak Prescott starting at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. These constants have been in place since Prescott stepped in for an injured Tony Romo in 2016.
However, Prescott’s future with the team may now be in question.
In a candid conversation with reporters on Thursday, Prescott acknowledged the possibility of playing for another team if he and the Cowboys cannot agree on a new contract extension.
“I want to be here, but you know when you look up all the great quarterbacks I’ve watched, they’ve played for other teams,” Prescott said. “So my point in saying that is that that’s not something to fear. That may be a reality for me one day. … Be where your feet are, make the most of it. Be confident in yourself, make the team better. I love my teammates. I love that locker room. I love everything about being out here in Oxnard and being a Dallas Cowboy. So that’s what allows me to be free and focus.”
Prescott is coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
He threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, leading the Cowboys to an NFC East championship. He also finished second in the NFL MVP voting, just behind Lamar Jackson.

However, despite his regular season success, Prescott once again struggled in the playoffs. This inconsistency has apparently led Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to reconsider his options at the quarterback position.
“I do not think that this will be his last year with the Cowboys, at all,” Jones said at the Cowboys’ introductory training camp press conference on Thursday.
Ultimately, it’s Jones’ responsibility to ensure Prescott’s future with the team, along with securing long-term deals for star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and pass rusher Micah Parsons, both of whom are also without long-term contracts.
The Dallas Cowboys, under the unpredictable leadership of Jerry Jones, remain a team full of uncertainties. Even Jones himself may not fully know what the future holds.
For now, Prescott is focused on the present. His commitment to his teammates and love for being a Cowboy drive him to give his best, regardless of what may come.
The upcoming season will be crucial for Prescott as he aims to prove his value and secure his place in Dallas for years to come. Whether or not he remains a Cowboy, his dedication and performance will continue to be pivotal for the team’s success.
