Another Georgia football player has found himself in legal trouble, and this time it’s a repeat offender.
Senior wide receiver Rara Thomas was arrested early Friday morning on a felony charge of cruelty to children and two misdemeanor charges of battery, all labeled as “family violence,” according to records from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Thomas was taken into custody and booked at 3:20 a.m.
This marks the second arrest for Thomas in the past 18 months. His previous arrest occurred in January 2023, when he faced a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor charge of family violence.
Thomas joined the Georgia Bulldogs last year after spending two seasons at Mississippi State. During his first season with Georgia, he appeared in 11 games, recording 23 receptions for 383 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately, his season was cut short when he missed the final three games due to a broken foot.

The arrest of Thomas is the latest in a series of legal issues plaguing the Georgia football program, adding to the troubling trend for head coach Kirby Smart’s team. Several players have faced arrests this offseason, raising concerns about discipline and conduct within the program.
Georgia’s football program has enjoyed significant success on the field under Smart’s leadership, but the repeated off-field incidents have cast a shadow over their achievements. The program’s reputation has taken a hit, and these ongoing legal troubles have prompted questions about the culture and oversight within the team.
Thomas’s arrest is particularly concerning given his prior legal issues and the severity of the charges he now faces. The felony charge of cruelty to children is a grave accusation that carries significant legal consequences. Additionally, the misdemeanor battery charges labeled as “family violence” suggest serious incidents that require thorough investigation and response.
As the legal process unfolds, Thomas’s future with the team and his football career remain uncertain. The university and the football program will likely face pressure to address these issues and implement measures to prevent further incidents.
For Kirby Smart, maintaining discipline and ensuring the well-being of his players is crucial. Balancing the demands of leading a successful football program while upholding high standards of conduct and responsibility is no small task. The recent arrests highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to player behavior, support systems, and accountability.
The Georgia Bulldogs are gearing up for another competitive season, and the focus will inevitably return to their performance on the field.
However, addressing the off-field issues and fostering a positive, respectful team culture will be equally important in ensuring the long-term success and integrity of the program.
