The sporting world is reeling from the devastating news that former Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver and kick returner, Jacoby Jones, has passed away.
Jones, a standout third-round draft pick from Lane College, was celebrated for his record-setting performance as a kickoff returner during Super Bowl XLVII for the Baltimore Ravens.
He tragically died in his sleep at his home, just days after celebrating his 40th birthday. The cause of death has not been announced. He is survived by his mother, Emily, and his son, Jacoby Jr.
The heartbreak among NFL fans was compounded by Jones’ final Instagram post.
Known for his reserved online presence, his last post dated back to December 2023. The post, shared with the NFL and the Ravens, commemorated his iconic Super Bowl XLVII performance against the San Francisco 49ers.
During that game, Jones made history by opening the second half with a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the longest-scoring play in Super Bowl history.
Additionally, he became the first player to record both a receiving touchdown and a return touchdown in the same Super Bowl. Many believed he deserved the Super Bowl MVP award following the Ravens’ 34-31 victory over the 49ers.

In April, Jones had been promoted to head coach of the Beaumont Renegades, an indoor football team, signaling the next chapter in his football career.
The Jones family released a statement confirming his death at his home in New Orleans. Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh expressed his sorrow, saying, “I loved Jacoby Jones. We all did. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. My favorite football play was when Jacoby was talking to his mom in the end zone, just before a late-game kickoff return against the Vikings in a snowstorm shootout. Jacoby then raced to catch the ball and run it back for a touchdown.”
The Houston Texans also mourned his loss, stating, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
Former Texans defensive end J.J. Watt shared his memories, saying, “Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around. Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon. R.I.P Jacoby Jones.”
Sam Gordon, owner of the Beaumont Renegades, praised Jones’ character, saying, “He was the best, he loved everyone. I think one of the most important things is he was a man of God. He was proud of how much he loved and feared his God. What was most important to him after football was helping the next person in line. He was the most humble and kind person to anybody who gave him the time and needed the time from him.”
Jacoby Jones’ legacy will live on through his remarkable achievements on the field and the indelible mark he left on those who knew him. His spirit, humility, and kindness will be remembered by fans, teammates, and friends alike.
