Cheryl Burke is paying tribute to former NFL wide receiver and Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) contestant Jacoby Jones, who tragically passed away at the age of 40.
The news of Jones’ death was confirmed on Sunday, July 14, by the NFL Players Association and the Baltimore Ravens, who stated that the athlete had “passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana.”
Although Burke, 40, was not partnered with Jones during his time on DWTS in 2013, she shared fond memories of their interactions and performances. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Burke reminisced about their time together, including a special trio dance where she joined Jones and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, to perform the paso doble.
“Absolutely devastated by the loss of my dear friend and fellow #dwts co-star, Jacoby Jones, who passed away in his sleep early this morning,” Burke wrote. “While we weren’t dance partners, I had the honor of sharing unforgettable moments with him, from being part of his trio dance to supporting his cherished foundation.”
Burke, who left DWTS in November 2022, continued, “My heart aches for Jacoby and his family. My prayers are with you all. Rest in peace, Jacoby. You will be deeply missed. ??? #ripjacoby #gonetoosoon.” Jones had finished in third place on season 16 of the show, leaving a lasting impression on both his fellow contestants and viewers.

The NFL Players Association also paid tribute to Jones on social media, sharing on X (formerly known as Twitter), “The family, including his mother, Emily, and his son, Little Jacoby, are together and asking for your prayers, privacy, and support as they navigate through this difficult time.”
The Baltimore Ravens released a heartfelt statement on their website, expressing their sorrow over Jones’ passing. “We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones,” the statement read. “Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day.”
The statement continued, “Jacoby will long be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community, and every area he called home. We share our deepest condolences with Jacoby’s family as we all begin to process this devastating loss.”
Jones’ football career was illustrious and impactful. Before joining the Ravens in 2012, he spent five years with the Houston Texans. His tenure with the Ravens was highlighted by a memorable performance in the 2013 Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers, where he became the first player in Super Bowl history to score both a receiving touchdown and a return touchdown in the same game.
The Ravens won that game 34-31, and Jones’ contributions were pivotal.
Throughout his nine-year NFL career, Jones also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the then-San Diego Chargers (now the Los Angeles Chargers). His legacy on the field was matched by his off-field charisma and the meaningful connections he forged with teammates, fans, and communities.
Jacoby Jones will be remembered as a remarkable athlete and a cherished friend to many. His sudden passing is a profound loss to all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
