Former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce had a notable rivalry with LeBron James in the early 2010s. On Friday’s episode of “Undisputed,” Pierce reminisced about their intense battles on the court and made a bold claim about his influence on LeBron’s career trajectory.
Pierce asserted that he played a pivotal role in LeBron’s evolution from an exceptional player to an all-time great.
“I truly feel responsible for taking LeBron to that next level,” Pierce stated. “When he went to Miami, Game 6 in Boston when we had them on the ropes to go back to the Finals, that was the game that took LeBron to the next level.”
Skip Bayless then asked Pierce if he believed he challenged LeBron on most possessions during their matchups.
“It wasn’t a lot against me. I was a little older. I guarded him a little. Brandon Bass guarded him,” Pierce admitted.

LeBron James joined the Miami Heat in 2010, largely motivated by the desire to overcome the Celtics and finally secure an NBA title. In this context, Pierce’s point holds some merit. The epic Game 6 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals, where LeBron delivered a legendary performance with 45 points and 15 rebounds, is often cited as a turning point in his career. It was a game that demonstrated his ability to rise to the occasion under immense pressure.
However, it’s important to note that Pierce was past his prime during these playoff battles between the Celtics and the Heat. By this time, LeBron was ascending to his peak, while the Celtics’ core, including Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen, were on the decline.
Pierce’s claim that he was the catalyst for LeBron’s leap to greatness is a subjective one. While their rivalry certainly provided LeBron with significant challenges and motivation, it’s arguable that LeBron’s development into an all-time great was a culmination of his immense talent, hard work, and the pursuit of excellence.
Do you agree with Pierce’s statement? Is he truly responsible for pushing LeBron to the next level, or was LeBron’s rise inevitable regardless of their rivalry? The debate continues.
