Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been formally charged in the Dominican Republic over his alleged involvement in an inappropriate relationship with a minor.
According to ESPN’s Juan Arturo Recio, Franco is facing serious charges of both sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor.
Franco has been absent from the Rays since last August when the allegations against the 23-year-old initially came to light. He was accused of engaging in a relationship with a 14-year-old girl, leading to his arrest earlier this year after being questioned by prosecutors in the Dominican Republic.
Additionally, Franco was accused of attempting to provide hush money to the mother of the alleged victim to secure her consent to the relationship.

In March, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) reached an agreement to place Franco on administrative leave through June 1.
This arrangement allowed for the possibility of his return to the season if the allegations were dismissed.
However, with the latest developments, Franco’s chances of returning this season appear to be slim.
Franco was in the midst of his most successful season last year when he was placed on leave. He boasted a .281 batting average with an .819 OPS, hitting 17 home runs and stealing 30 bases in 112 games.
His performance on the field had been a significant contribution to the team’s efforts before his abrupt departure.
