Rising boxing sensation Ryan Garcia has faced a significant setback as the New York State Athletic Commission has handed him a one-year suspension, according to reports from ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.
This disciplinary action was announced on Thursday and follows Garcia’s positive test results for ostarine, a substance banned for its performance-enhancing properties.
The testing incidents occurred both the day before and on the day of his high-stakes pay-per-view fight against Devin Haney, which originally took place on April 20, 2024.
The fight had concluded with Garcia securing a majority decision victory, marking the first defeat in Haney’s previously unblemished professional career. However, the commission’s recent ruling has altered the fight’s outcome to a no contest, effectively reinstating Haney’s undefeated record to 31-0.
In the wake of the allegations in May, Garcia vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to defend his reputation, asserting his integrity with statements such as “everybody knows I don’t cheat” and claiming he has “never taken a steroid.” Despite his denials, the commission’s decision stands, resulting in not only a suspension but also significant financial repercussions for Garcia. He is required to forfeit $1 million of his earnings from the fight to Golden Boy Promotions and pay a $10,000 fine.
Devin Haney, reflecting on the commission’s decision and the impact on his record, expressed his gratitude towards the commission and his supporters. Speaking to ESPN, Haney remarked, “I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me during this whole process. The facts are the facts, and I wasn’t on an even playing field. Happy I was able to receive justice for what happened. It’s all part of my story and it’s only going to make me better. I look to enjoy this time with my family and friends and see what’s next.”
Amidst this turmoil, Garcia has also hinted at a significant career decision, claiming he has retired from boxing on social media this week.
