The PGA Tour has recently taken an unprecedented step by creating a special sponsor exemption tailored specifically for Tiger Woods, a legend of the game and a 15-time major champion.
This decision, as reported by ESPN, is in recognition of Woods’ “exceptional lifetime achievement” and is not applicable to just any PGA Tour event.
Instead, it encompasses the eight signature events of the tour, which are characterized by their limited participant fields and significantly higher prize pools.
This distinctive exemption was formally approved during a meeting of the PGA Tour policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors, held this past Tuesday in Hartford, Connecticut.
According to a memo cited by ESPN, which was distributed to tour members, the exemption introduces a unique category designed exclusively for Tiger Woods, celebrating his extraordinary career milestone of more than 80 PGA Tour victories.

This move comes at a poignant time in Woods’ career, which has been marred by challenges in recent years, particularly following a severe car accident. Since the accident, Woods has participated in only nine official PGA Tour events over the last three seasons, with his sole non-major appearance being at the Genesis Invitational—a tournament he hosts.
Despite these hurdles, Woods’ participation in recent major tournaments has been noteworthy, albeit with mixed results. He has managed to make the cut at the Masters, where he finished in 60th place.
However, he faced setbacks at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open, missing the cut in both events. Looking forward, Woods is scheduled to compete in the upcoming Open Championship, set to take place in July at the Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.
This special exemption for Woods by the PGA Tour underscores the deep respect and acknowledgment of his impact on the sport, signaling a significant gesture of recognition for his unparalleled contributions and achievements in golf.
This exemption not only facilitates his participation in high-profile events amidst ongoing physical recovery challenges but also celebrates his legendary status within the sport, ensuring his continued presence in golf’s most prestigious tournaments.
