Bryson DeChambeau, once a polarizing figure in the world of golf, has recently seen a transformation in public perception, culminating in a widespread appreciation for his demeanor, particularly following his reaction to not making the U.S. Olympic team for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
A few years ago, DeChambeau was often at the center of controversy, his analytical approach to golf and unique style choices—including his signature cap—sometimes rubbing fans and fellow players the wrong way.
Moreover, his decision to join LIV Golf marked a significant departure from traditional PGA Tour participation, further stirring debate.
Despite these challenges, DeChambeau’s popularity began to shift positively, especially after clinching his second U.S. Open title at Pinehurst, solidifying his status as not just a skilled golfer but a likable personality in the sport.
Currently ranked 10th in the Official World Golf Ranking, DeChambeau’s standing is impressive, particularly given his absence from PGA Tour events over the past two years.
His potential inclusion in the U.S. Olympic team was highly anticipated; however, his association with LIV Golf ultimately precluded his selection.

The team announced on Tuesday for the Paris Olympics—consisting of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa—was selected based on the Official World Golf Ranking, a metric from which DeChambeau was notably absent due to his non-participation in PGA events.
Addressing this on “The Pat McAfee Show” following his U.S. Open victory, DeChambeau shared a reflective and mature perspective. He expressed a deep desire to represent his country and acknowledged the disappointment of missing the Olympics previously due to COVID-19 and now for other reasons tied to his professional choices. “I would love to represent the United States. It was tough for me not to go last time around because of COVID. It’s just one of those things that happened,” he explained.
DeChambeau continued, “Hopefully, this game of golf will get figured out and come back together and I’ll be able to play. I’m playing great golf. I’m excited. Am I frustrated and disappointed? Sure, you can absolutely say that, but I made the choices that I’ve made and there’s consequences to that and I respect it. But hopefully sooner rather than later we figure that out so we can get past all that and move forward into showing how awesome this sport actually is around the globe.”
DeChambeau’s candid and gracious acceptance of the consequences of his professional decisions, along with his optimistic outlook on the future of golf, showcases his growth both as an athlete and as a public figure, endearing him further to fans and critics alike.
His transformation from a controversial player to a respected voice in the sport marks a significant evolution in his career and public persona.
