You do the crime, you’re going to serve some time.
During a recent match, Sophia Smith, a standout player for the Portland Thorns and the U.S. women’s national team, received two yellow cards, both for time-wasting, leading to her suspension from next weekend’s key rivalry game.
The incident that clinched her suspension was particularly unusual. Smith attempted to hide the ball under the bench, an action for which she received her second yellow card for delaying the game.

Sports publication All for XI commented on the incident, noting its mixed reception: “This will likely be remembered as one of the funniest red cards in NWSL history. However, unless it’s overturned, Smith will miss Portland’s next game against their rivals, Seattle Reign FC. At the moment, it seemed a humorous end to an engaging match, but later reflections may view this as either too severe a punishment by the referee or a moment of poor judgment by Smith in her effort to help her team cling to a lead.”
Smith, recognized as one of the top talents on the U.S. women’s national team, is known for her fiery playing style. Unfortunately, this time, her antics came at a cost.
