A sports anchor in Denver has labeled Rockies infielder Kris Bryant — who has a batting average of just .186 through his first 24 games this year and recently landed back on the injured list — as a metaphorical “bank robber.”
Scotty Gange, a sports anchor with 9 News, expressed his views quite dramatically, according to Awful Announcing.
“Kris Bryant is one of the greatest bank robbers of all time,” Gange said. “The Rockies’ first baseman is heading back on the injury list and will miss at least another week and a half. In two and a half seasons, he has missed 239 games. That’s about two out of every three.”
Gange pointed out the financial aspect of Bryant’s contract, noting, “With his guaranteed contract, Bryant has earned $25 million in those games which he has not played. That is stealing. For those wondering, 25 million bucks would be the sixth-greatest heist in world history.”

Bryant, who had already missed significant time in 2024 due to a low back strain, suffered a left rib contusion after an awkward fall during a game. He ended up tangled in the netting while trying to catch a foul ball, contorting his body in the process.
Since signing a seven-year, $182 million contract with the Rockies before the 2022 season, Bryant has played in only 146 games, hitting .247 and enduring seven stints on the injured list, as reported by ESPN.
Rockies manager Bud Black spoke about Bryant’s continual health struggles. “It’s been Kris’ hope to stay healthy and play — stay on the field,” Black told reporters, according to ESPN. “It’s been interrupted often. And there’s frustration because Kris wants to play. These different types of injuries have cropped up. I don’t have a crystal ball.”
Black remained hopeful about Bryant’s recovery, expressing a desire to see him back in action and regain his form. “But hopefully, this will resolve itself relatively quickly and get him back on the field, get him back on the active roster and, hopefully, get some momentum performance-wise, where we see the real Kris Bryant.”
Earlier in his career, Bryant was a standout performer for the Chicago Cubs, contributing significantly to their 2016 World Series win, earning multiple All-Star selections, and capturing Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in consecutive seasons before his injury-plagued stint with the Rockies.
