Dan Hurley is in talks with the Los Angeles Lakers about potentially becoming their next head coach.
However, he might still stay with UConn, according to seasoned college basketball journalist Jeff Goodman. Hurley is reportedly undecided, with a “50-50” chance of taking the Lakers’ offer or sticking with the Huskies. While the Lakers can offer a larger salary, UConn is prepared to make Hurley one of the top three highest-paid college basketball coaches with a new contract.
Goodman notes that while the financial aspect is significant, it is not the main factor in Hurley’s decision.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Hurley has been a prime candidate for the Lakers from the beginning. It’s possible Hurley initially declined the Lakers’ offer but is now reconsidering.
The key question now is whether Hurley is genuinely interested in transitioning to the NBA, or if he’s leveraging this opportunity to secure a better deal from UConn. It’s also worth considering if discussions with a renowned peer might have influenced him to revisit the possibility with the Lakers.
Hurley has led UConn to two consecutive national championships and has previously turned down a major college coaching position, though he has not dismissed the idea of coaching in the NBA in the future.
