The Kansas City Chiefs appear to have conquered all recent challenges.
They’ve clinched back-to-back Super Bowl titles, dominated their division since 2015, and maintained a record above .500 since 2012. Their tight end, a celebrity in his own right, is dating one of the most famous Americans. Clearly, life is good for the Chiefs.
But what keeps them driven in a sport where they’ve achieved so much? For quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the football field.
Mahomes has consistently experimented with his play, and during Wednesday’s minicamp, he hinted at elevating his game even further. He executed a behind-the-back pass to running back Carson Steele, reminiscent of a basketball maneuver. Steele, a UCLA standout, impressively snagged the ball with one hand.

Mahomes has previously expressed interest in incorporating the behind-the-back pass into actual games, a move that has full support from Chiefs coach Andy Reid. “Coach Reid wants me to throw it behind-the-back more than anyone,” Mahomes shared on a “First Things First” interview in May. “He designs plays for it, but it’s really about me finding the confidence to pull it off during a game. One of these days, we’ll make it happen, hopefully to Travis [Kelce].”
As the new season looms, starting with a game against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5, all eyes will be on whether Mahomes will bring this innovative play to the regular season.
