Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides has stirred controversy among WNBA fans following her comments after the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Sparks.
Sides remarked that her team spends “too much time talking to the officials,” a statement made even more notable by Caitlin Clark picking up a technical foul in the first half of the game.

Sides said via reporter Matthew Byrne,
“We’re spending too much time talking to the officials. We’ve got to leave that alone. We’ve got to just play our game and let them do their job and not put it in their hands… We shouldn’t get technicals. Let me get the technicals,”
Although Sides may have been addressing the team’s overall behavior, fans interpreted it as a veiled criticism of Clark.
This interpretation led to a strong backlash, with some fans accusing Sides of failing to support her players adequately.
Social media reactions included calls for her firing and criticism of her leadership style.
One fan commented, “She doesn’t fight for her players though. This would be fine if she was a firecracker with the officials sometimes.”
Another echoed, “Get the technicals then… fight for your players.”
Others expressed frustration with her public handling of the situation, suggesting such comments should be reserved for the locker room.
One user on X wrote, “Christie Sides can never take any responsibility. This isn’t something you say to the press. This type of stuff she likes to air out are things that should be said in the locker room.”
Sides, who has been head coach since the 2023 season, faces significant pressure to improve the franchise’s performance, especially with the addition of a star player like Caitlin Clark.
Calling out Clark, especially after she scored a career-high 30 points, was perceived by many as an unwise and bold move.
Whether Sides intended to single out Clark or not, the reaction from fans highlights the delicate balance coaches must maintain when publicly addressing their team’s performance.
