While the Pittsburgh Steelers may have acquired Russell Wilson with the expectation that he would be their starting quarterback, Justin Fields is not ready to concede the top spot.
Both quarterbacks were present for the start of the Steelers’ voluntary offseason activities. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Fields expressed his determination not to settle for the backup role.
“I’m definitely competing,” Fields stated. “Russ knows that. We’re competing against each other every day. … I definitely don’t have the mindset of just sitting all year.”

For both Fields and Wilson, joining Pittsburgh represents a new beginning.
Wilson was part of a major trade to the Denver Broncos in 2022, where he received a substantial contract extension. However, his performance in 2022 was lackluster, though it showed some improvement the following year. The Broncos had a record of 11-19 in his starts.
Fields, drafted 11th overall by the Bears in 2021, showed some progress in Chicago, but the team struggled with a 10-28 record in his starts. He was traded to the Steelers as the Bears made room to draft Caleb Williams last month.
Now, both quarterbacks are in Pittsburgh, each eager to demonstrate their capabilities and silence their critics.
