WNBA standout Kelsey Plum has clarified her ethnic background, addressing a common misconception among fans.
Many have mistaken the Las Vegas Aces point guard for Puerto Rican, a notion fueled by her nickname “Puerto Rican Princess,” despite her not having Puerto Rican heritage.
Originally from Poway, California, the 29-year-old is of Irish descent, a fact she shared in a recent WNBA video. “I’m not Puerto Rican,” Plum stated. “I’m so sorry to let people down. I’m just white; I’m Irish, actually. I’m a proud Irish woman but I feel like I’m an ally to all communities.”
Plum also expressed her connection to the Puerto Rican community, especially as her team faces Puerto Rico in South Carolina. “I’ve been called a Boriqua. Whatever y’all need me to be for you, I’m rocking. Right, let’s do it,” she added, embracing her role as an honorary member of the community.

Fans reacted warmly to her declaration, with one commenting on her pronunciation skills: “She rolled her R, y’all better claim her.”
Amid these revelations, Plum is also navigating personal challenges.
She recently confirmed her split from NFL tight end Darren Waller, her husband of just over a year. “The offseason’s been tough for me,” Plum disclosed in an interview with FOX5 reporter Paloma Villicana.
Despite the public nature of her divorce, she remains optimistic, attributing growth in her faith and self-understanding to the experience. Plum remains committed to leading the Aces in their quest for another championship, focusing her energy on the upcoming season.
