We’ve heard of some players paying outrageous sums of money for the jersey number of their choice — recently Stefon Diggs did so after being traded to the Houston Texans.
However, Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels did not have to give up much to acquire his #5 from the team’s punter, Tress Way.
This from ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
Commanders P Tress Way did not want a cash transaction from Jayden Daniels for the No. 5. Instead, as part of the exchange, when Way is done with his NFL career, Daniels plans to send Way and his family to an Oklahoma-LSU football game, presumably with good seats, per source.
Way, aged 34, played for Oklahoma from 2008-2012 before transitioning to the NFL.
The Sooners now compete in the SEC alongside Daniels’ alma mater, LSU.
These two traditional powerhouses are scheduled to face off in Baton Rouge to conclude the 2024 season on November 30th.
Daniels, who clinched the Heisman Trophy with the Tigers in 2023, was drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by the Commanders this year.
Securing seats for the OU-LSU game shouldn’t pose a problem for Daniels if Way decides to attend, provided it aligns with the Commanders’ regular season schedule.
