Following his decisive victory over Devin Haney, boxer Ryan Garcia has been enveloped in controversy due to testing positive for the banned substance Ostarine.
Despite this setback, Garcia has been vocal with several provocative statements.
He has claimed to have bet $2 million on himself, admitted to a rapid weight gain after missing his target weight, and controversially linked his positive PED test to his political support for Donald Trump. Garcia also disclosed that his preparation for the fight involved daily drinking and partying.
On a recent episode of the Fully Tilted podcast hosted by Bob Menery, Garcia made another bold claim, stating he was significantly intoxicated during his bout with Haney. He dismissed the idea that steroids provided any real advantage in boxing, saying, “Steroids don’t even give you an advantage. Did it stop Devin Haney from getting cracked in the face? No, bro. It’s not going to help you with timing, with skill, with management… and if I was on steroids, I would have been in way better shape.”
Detailing his state during the match, Garcia added, “I was literally drinking every day, smoking weed, every single day. I didn’t stop, not even till the day of the fight. Drink, drink, drink, and I got in there high as f— and I beat his ass right. That was so easy. It was a walk in the park. I had harder fights in sparring, bro. It was not hard at all.”
Garcia also claimed that Haney himself acknowledged being significantly outclassed, arguing that his performance was not enhanced by steroids: “Steroids didn’t help that, brother. I’ve fought somebody on steroids and I’ve knocked them the f— out. It doesn’t do anything.”
As Garcia awaits the results of his B-sample, he faces the possibility of a suspension, fines, and the potential reversal of his victory over Haney if the test confirms the presence of banned substances and he fails to prove his innocence.
Meanwhile, Devin Haney has remarked on Garcia’s assertions with a lack of surprise, suggesting an awareness of Garcia’s unpredictable nature.
